All Staticworx Flooring Materials are ESD Component Certified™

What does Component Certified mean and why does it matter?

Component certification goes beyond basic system qualification to involve testing of each individual component of a static-control flooring system before certifying the full system.

Component Certification is all about peace of mind.

All AmeriWorx floor tiles, for example, are 100% tested inline for conductivity while they are being cut. Test results are stored in a data logger along with information about the batch and date of manufacturing. This allows StaticWorx to deliver the exact resistance range for this product, as promised to the customer, with no variations. And it ensures that customers will never discover that the resistance is incorrect after they’ve installed and are using the floor.

Why is this important?

For the floor to dissipate static at a rate neither too slow nor too quick for the application, the resistance has to be right. To be sure tiles measure properly and resistance is not affected by system components, you need to know the point-to-point resistance of every tile – independent of the adhesive.

Why?

Conditions, such as vapor drive in the subfloor, can cause variations in the electrical resistance of adhesives. Such variations can, in turn, cause changes in system resistance.

Suppose you buy a static-dissipative flooring system. Alone, the tile measures in the conductive range (not an unusual scenario). To achieve its static-dissipative system resistance with conductive tile, the underlying ground plane – e.g., the adhesive – must read in the static-dissipative range. When the adhesive is less conductive than the floor surface, it slows static dissipation to ground, raising overall system resistance.

What if there’s vapor in the concrete?

After it’s installed, the adhesive will absorb moisture from the concrete, increasing the component conductivity (i.e., the conductivity of the adhesive). When the conductivity of the adhesive increases, the conductivity of the entire system will increase – in which case the floor could fail certification.

StaticWorx negates this problem by ensuring that every component measures within the resistance range chosen by the customer – right out of the box. Components never rely on other components to change system resistance. You can place our static-dissipative components on water and they will still measure in the static-dissipative range. In fact, we verify the electrical resistance of our ESD vinyl by performing a test whereby we spray water/mist under the tile and test the resistance to be sure it does not change.

Finding out that a floor’s resistance deviates from the specification is costly and unnecessary. Controlling resistance at the surface first – before the tile is installed, expected to perform as a system – prevents any surprises.

Large, 1/4" gap from shrinkage between tiles. Water can collect in large gaps causing adhesive breakdown and de-lamination of floor.
Shrinkage has caused an 1/8" gap between tiles in this entry to a clean room. Dirt has begun to collect in gaps creating an unsightly outline between tiles.
Lack of squareness creates uneven joints between tiles. Over a 50 foot span, these small variations grow cumulatively to as much as 1/2"
Tiles are not square creating poor alignment at four corners. As installation progresses, an entire row of tiles will need to be cut back to compensate for alignment differences.
StaticWorx offers static-dissipative and conductive options. So you never need to fit a round peg into a square hole. We offer options that meet the proper resistance range for every application.

ESD Component Certification assures success and peace of mind for general contractors flooring installers, specifiers and, most important, end users.
