Most buyers carefully analyze static control properties like resistance, static generation, and maintenance requirements associated with ESD flooring tiles and coatings. While these are certainly key attributes of any flooring material designated for technology-based workspaces, buyers often overlook the environmental liabilities of the various flooring products – i.e., whether or not they’re produced with compounds that could affect employee health in the workplace.

What good is low cost, high performing ESD floor if it emits chemicals that adversely affect the health of occupants in the building?
According to the EPA, “the term ‘Sick Building Syndrome’ (SBS) is used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified. The complaints may be localized in a particular room or zone, or may be widespread throughout the building.”

According to the EPA, “the term ‘Building Related Illness’ (BRI) is used when symptoms of diagnosable illness are identified and can be attributed directly to airborne building contaminants.”
One of the contributors to SBS are VOCs found in various flooring materials. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds, read the full definition here. VOCs are often found in offshore sourced conductive tile. Offshore tile is often less expensive than domestic produced tile. The lower cost comes at a price; these tiles are produced less expensively than domestic tiles through the use of fillers, which may emit VOCs.
