What’s the biggest nemesis in any installation of permanent ESD flooring? As most contractors will tell you, it’s the adhesive. Up to 90%, or more, of bond failures result from the incorrect application of wet adhesives.

Moisture under floor tiles, causing failed installation due to reemulsified conductive adhesive

Adhesives are prone to human error. Think about the variables: trowel size, dry time, curing. Other variables include: how the substrate absorbs liquids; how much humidity is in the space; and whether or not the floor gets rolled. Then there are time factors to consider. Wet adhesives need time to stabilize before any flooring is installed. After the floor has been installed, wet adhesives need time to cure before opening the space to ordinary traffic.

What happens if the floor is subjected to traffic too soon? What if people roll chairs with casters over an area where the adhesive hadn’t dried, or cured, properly? Any of these variables, or errors, can cause the floor to fail. Even if the installation is stellar, there are no errors, and bonding is perfect, the loss of all this production time costs money.
