Conductive Flooring

Conductive flooring provides a low-resistance pathway that quickly transports static charges to ground.

Defined by ANSI/ESD standards, conductive floors measure under 10⁶ ohms (10^6 Ω). Because they discharge static electricity more rapidly than dissipative materials, conductive floors are specified in industries where even a small spark could damage sensitive equipment or ignite flammable materials.

How Conductive Differs from Dissipative and Antistatic

Conductive, dissipative and antistatic are all terms used to describe static-control flooring. Although often used interchangeably, they are not the same.

Conductive flooring

<10⁶ Ω. Used where static must be discharged very quickly to eliminate risk of equipment damage, fire, or explosion.

Dissipative flooring

10⁶–10⁹ Ω. Slows discharge to avoid potential shock in environments like telecom, data centers, and flight towers.

Antistatic flooring

Refers only to low static generation. It does not indicate resistance or grounding properties and parts of the material made of polymers may be insulative.

Applications for Conductive Flooring

Conductive flooring provides low electrical resistance ideal for applications when fast charge removal is essential for safety or operational integrity. Applications include:

Battery manufacturing plants

Munitions and explosives facilities

Pharmaceutical production involving solvents or flammable chemicals

Semiconductor cleanrooms and electronics assembly lines*

Specialized labs and R&D environments handling volatile materials

Key Points

    • Resistance <10⁶ Ω, compliant with ANSI/ESD S20.20, ASTM F150 and IEC 61340-5-1
    • Rapid charge dissipation helps prevent catastrophic ignition or equipment failure
    • Reduces risk of static-related downtime or costly damage
    • Integral part of an ESD-control system (footwear, adhesives, installation, testing)

*Electronics manufacturing and other ANSI/ESD S20.20 programs do not rely solely on conductivity or whether a floor is conductive or static dissipative. In these applications the floor is evaluated as a system, evaluating multiple factors, including charge generation, resistance of a person wearing ESD footwear in combination with the floor and resistance to groundable point. Low flooring resistance alone is not necessarily a good indicator of performance on these other tests.
