Glossary: Anti Static Flooring

The term antistatic refers to a condition where static generation is inhibited during contact and separation with another material. Anti static flooring (also known as ESD flooring or static-control flooring) can either be static dissipative or conductive. However, not all static-dissipative or conductive flooring is antistatic. ESD floors can be conductive and still generate enough static to cause a harmful ESD event.

Note: the term antistatic has been replaced by the more accurate term: low charge generating. Low charge-generating materials prevent static from accumulating on people or objects.

An 8-picture collage showing the different types of ESD flooring. In the first column is an ESD epoxy installation in a warehouse, below that is an ESD (static-dissipative) carpet installation in a classroom, below that is an ESD (electrically conductive) rubber installation in a manufacturing facility. In the second column is an ESD carpet installation in an IT room and below that is another ESD rubber installation in a manufacturing facility. In the third column is an ESD rubber installation in a cleanroom, below that is an ESD (conductive) vinyl installation and below that is another ESD vinyl installation in a factory.
